Bill Committees

Through my work on the Devolution Bill Committee, I scrutinised legislation to help change the law where it matters most to you.

All bills must go through a 'Committee Stage' in the House of Commons, during which time amendments can be proposed by both the Government and opposition parties. Each opposition party will be permitted only a few members to sit on each bill committee, so Liberal Democrat members take it in turns to represent the party in these committees.

English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill

I sat on the bill committee for the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill, alongside my colleague Vikki Slade MP.

As the Liberal Democrats, we proposed over two hundred amendments to this bill, to each of which myself or Vikki spoke to in committee.

I was very proud to sit on this committee and represent the interests of my constituents by proposing amendments that would strengthen transparency and accountability in local government, and by pushing the Government to remember the importance of involving in devolution those smaller councils and parish representatives who understand their communities best.
