“LET’S END FURNITURE POVERTY” SAYS MP MANUELA PERTEGHELLA

Manuela Perteghella MP has been working with social housing providers in the Stratford on Avon constituency, and Stratford-on-Avon District Council,  to encourage furnished lets, allowing people who have faced setbacks to get back on their feet and rebuild their lives.

Certain local providers including Orbit and Stonewater are now working on pilot schemes to offer furnished lets where furniture is provided and included, or available via a rent and purchase scheme.

Commenting on this Manuela Perteghella MP said:

“Women fleeing domestic violence, people who are young and suddenly homeless and many others may find themselves without the means to buy furniture. Such people are often just about managing on low incomes and renting.

“Anyone who has set up a home knows that white goods, furniture and all the small things that are needed to set up a home can equal thousands of pounds worth of investment. If you have very little to begin with, and a small income, the challenge of furnishing a property can be overwhelming. 

“Without furniture, people can feel ashamed to socialise in their home, which can quickly lead to social isolation. The financial trap of never being able to afford things like sofas, beds, fridges and washing machines can be difficult to escape. This type of rental can make all the difference. 

“I have been working with End Furniture Poverty, Stratford District Council and local housing providers and agreement has been reached with some providers to progress this initiative for tenants in crisis. 

“I have published an Early Day Motion to raise awareness among other MPs and encourage them to take this initiative far and wide.
